SAML
An XML-based standard for exchanging authentication assertions between an identity provider and a service provider, dominant in enterprise SSO.
In more detail
SAML 2.0 has been the enterprise SSO standard for nearly twenty years. The protocol is verbose, XML-based, and well-supported across the established enterprise software stack. New deployments increasingly favor OIDC, but SAML remains the lingua franca in heavily regulated industries.
SAML and OIDC solve overlapping problems with different ergonomics. Most modern SaaS supports both, and customers pick based on their existing IDP and tooling.
Where this shows up at Ceven
Ceven supports SAML SP-initiated and IDP-initiated SSO with metadata-based onboarding, SCIM provisioning, and Okta universal-logout receiver wiring. The customer can stand up SSO inside an afternoon with the standard IDP.
