Frequently asked questions

Ceven manages your Fixer API key through an encrypted vault. When you connect your account, you provide your API key which we store at rest using industry standard encryption. The agent only retrieves this key at the exact moment it needs to make a request to the Fixer endpoints. This key is never exposed in the clear within your workflow logs or to the LLM. You can rotate your key in the Fixer dashboard at any time and simply update the connection setting in Ceven to resume service without having to rebuild your existing currency workflows.
This depends on your specific Fixer subscription plan. While the API supports 170 currencies, the free tier typically restricts the base currency to EUR. If your workflow requires using USD or GBP as the base currency for all calculations, you must have a paid Fixer plan that supports base currency changes. Ceven will automatically detect if a request fails due to base currency restrictions and will notify you in the workflow logs if you need to upgrade your Fixer plan to support your chosen base currency.
The update frequency is determined by your Fixer plan level. Basic plans may see updates every hour, while professional and enterprise plans offer updates every minute or even in real time. Ceven does not cache rates internally for long periods because we want your workflows to be as accurate as possible. Every time a workflow calls the latest rates action, Ceven hits the Fixer API directly to ensure you are getting the most current data available under your specific plan limits.
Yes, as long as the date exists within the Fixer historical database. You can pull rates for any specific date in the past to reconcile old invoices or analyze historical trends. The agent simply passes the date in the required YYYY MM DD format to the Fixer API. If you are attempting to pull data from a date before Fixer began tracking a specific currency, the API will return an error which Ceven will catch and report as a missing data point for that specific date.
When Fixer returns a rate limit error, Ceven implements an exponential backoff strategy. The agent will pause the workflow and retry the request after a short delay. If the limit is still exceeded after several attempts, the workflow will enter a failed state and send you a notification. To avoid this, we recommend scheduling high volume pricing updates during off peak hours or upgrading your Fixer plan to increase your monthly request quota for better reliability in production environments.
Yes. By using the supported symbols action, Ceven pulls the full list of valid ISO currency codes from Fixer. You can build a workflow that checks a user provided currency code against this list before attempting a conversion. This prevents workflow failures and API errors caused by typos or unsupported currency requests. The agent can also map the short symbol to the full currency name to provide a better user experience in your customer facing applications or internal reports.
Fixer provides high quality data from various commercial sources, but it is intended for informational and operational use. While many companies use it for internal reporting and pricing, you should consult with your accounting department or a certified public accountant to ensure that the specific data source meets the regulatory requirements for your jurisdiction. Ceven simply acts as the transport layer that moves this data from the API into your systems of record like NetSuite or QuickBooks.
Absolutely. You can build a workflow that runs on a schedule to check the latest Fixer rates. If the rate for a specific pair moves by more than a percentage you define, the agent can trigger a secondary action to update your product prices in your store or notify your finance team via Slack. This allows you to maintain a consistent profit margin without manually monitoring the forex market every day, turning a manual monitoring task into a fully automated business process.
